After a night of sleepless dreams

He rises with the morning sun

No matter the weather or circumstance

A rancher’s work is never done

Winter’s chill invades his bones

Spring’s green promise far away

His coffee drained to bitter dregs

He wearily begins his day

Collar up, hat brim down

Bracing himself against the snow

He steers his horse to the mountaintop

Surveys his kingdom down below

He lifts in the saddle, heart in his throat

On the horizon, a rider alone

A sight approaching Heaven itself —

A wandering son coming home.
